UCRF/NUCCA 2010 Research Funding
NUCCA/UCRF research now stands where we have wanted it to be for a very long time. We received record funding for the majority our 2010 projects which include the Supine Leg Check Study, X-ray Reliability, and the Calgary-based Phase Contrast Study.
As a result of our successful fundraising efforts to meet the terms of the Tao Matching Funds pledge of $100,000, NUCCA/UCRF was awarded much more than expected with funding for half of the three previously mentioned studies. Also, specifically for the Phase Contrast study, we received an additional $40,000 gift from Canada's Hecht Foundation, $25,000 from Trans Canada Pipeline, and another $15,000 from Mr. Hal Kvisle, a Canadian NUCCA patient. This means that the Phase Contrast study is now fully funded!
The Leg Check pilot study is fully funded as well with the gift from the Tao Foundation and money raised from our Small Steps and Practice Innovation campaigns. We still need to raise funds to support the remaining portion of the two-part X-ray Reliability study and Practice Based Research project, but we now have enough to begin our work in accomplishing a major portion of our research goals for 2010.
We extend a heartfelt thanks to all of you for participating in our fundraising efforts. A special thanks to Dr. Scholten for his work and profound success with the Tao Foundation, and to Dr. Hasick, who has gone beyond the call and raised more in Small Steps funds than any of our clinics, and also approached the new Canadian foundation donors. We are very appreciative of these commitments, and to those who joined or renewed memberships to the Gregory Circle to help cover the administrative fees of research. This has been truly a year of hard work and triumph.
Why Become a 2010 Gregory Circle Member?
The ability for NUCCA to flourish has always been dependent upon the commitment and involvement of our membership, and we are profoundly appreciative of that support. Last year, in light of the extensive growth of our organization, we established the Gregory Circle membership with five different category levels as a method of funding our objectives for the enhanced administration of research, public awareness, and education strategies. The response to this drive was extremely positive and enabled us to achieve our goals as well as provide funds to help meet the matching funds challenge proposed by the Tao Foundation of Canada. As you may know, our ablity to meet the challenge resulted in extensive funding from the Tao and other major foundations. This is a truly historic moment for NUCCA/UCRF research because we now have the means to move forward with the majority of the 2010 research agenda which demonstrates how support, not matter how large or small, can clearly make a significant difference.
The NUCCA Board of Directors invites you to consider becoming part of the Gregory Circle (www.nucca.org/become_member.php) recognizing that as individuals we can help our communities, but as an organization we can change the world! Please join those who made the step into the Gregory Circle Membership 2010.

NUCCA Endorses American X-Ray Digital Programs
American X-ray produces superior digital x-ray equipment and software with excellent support and service including remote software training, support and updates.
American X-ray has been building equipment for NUCCA doctors for more than 30 years. During this time, they have implemented new designs to their equipment, such as the separate headclamp carrier for their L-frames, to meet the specific x-ray needs of NUCCA practitioners.
During the last 3 years, American X-ray has worked with Viztek, a medical imaging software development firm, to develop x-ray analysis software that will enable NUCCA practitioners to completely analyze their x-rays quickly and while meeting NUCCA's strict standards. Dr. Justin Brown has worked diligently with their programmers during this time to integrate the NUCCA analysis into the software. Dr. Marshall Dickholtz Jr. and Dr. Michael Zabelin have also worked with American X-ray along with Dr. Brown to fine tune the analysis tools to achieve improved.
American X-ray is excited to bring this level of technology to NUCCA. Many NUCCA doctors are already utilizing this software in their offices. These pioneers have all been more than pleased with the efficiency, accuracy and financial savings they have realized as a result. Dr. Gregory Goffe is an established NUCCA practitioner in Ohio who has integrated a Digital X-ray system from American X-ray into his existing x-ray system. Dr. Goffe says "The Digital X-ray with NUCCA software analysis has decreased the time I spend analyzing x-rays. Now I can spend more time serving our existing patients and working on growing my practice."
The functionally that Digital X-ray with the NUCCA analysis software provides is unattainable with plain film. Images can be enlarged and viewed on high resolution monitors. Contrast and density can be also be adjusted which virtually eliminates retakes except in the case of positioning. Patient Education and marketing also reach an entirely new level when Digital X-ray is used. Doctors can utilize the software in their report of findings to help patients gain an understanding of their condition and of the care that is being offered. Patients can take home a copy of their x-ray on a CD and share this information with their friends and families.
In addition, NUCCA now has the potential to set up a server system with web based software that will enable doctors to send in their x-rays for certification via the internet. These x-rays can be viewed and graded by Certified NUCCA doctors anywhere in the world who have an internet connection. This server system can also work as a research database collecting data and x-rays at a record pace.
American X-ray is constantly adding new equipment to their product line. They currently offer several different models of CR (Computed Radiography) Readers and DR (Direct Radiography) Panels. As the technology advances, American X-ray will stay on the leading edge in bringing this equipment to NUCCA practitioners. American is also continually updating the software, putting better tools and more efficient methods in the hands of the NUCCA practitioner. American X-ray backs their equipment and software with excellent support and service including remote software training, support and updates.
American X-ray is looking forward to working with NUCCA to advance Upper Cervical care for many years to come!
Good Morning America Features NUCCA Blood Pressure Study
NUCCA doctors realize there is scientific, medical, and chiropractic exposure resulting from the blood pressure study that has now reached the national media through ABC's Good Morning America's segment : "Hypertension: A Pain in the Neck". [Tuesday March 25 (2008)]
The NUCCA Director of Research believes that ABC's Dr. Tim Johnson assessment of the study is correct. It is "very intriguing", "important" and "absolutely deserves more study" but this was a study involving only one Chicago certified NUCCA doctor and a small number of people. Scientists call such a study a pilot study. No one knows the long- term, single- adjustment effect because the study only kept track of patients for 8 weeks after the adjustment. When asked why it works, Dr. Johnson said "We don't know why." And NUCCA research does not know the answer to "why" either although we certainly have some educated guesses. Dr. Johnson stated that the area of the brainstem where the atlas vertebra is located is involved with regulation of blood pressure.
Both Tim Johnson, MD, (Boston) and George Bakris, MD, (Chicago & lead author of the study) realize that there was a "very significant drop in blood pressure" and realize the importance of future research to determine which people can benefit from this procedure.
NUCCA has developed a highly advanced hand-adjustment procedure that is an extremely precise and gentle technique unlike any other kind of chiropractic care. NUCCA chiropractic addresses mechanical spinal injuries (trauma) primarily in the neck and head region. These injuries cause neurological, postural, and spinal imbalances.
The tool of the NUCCA doctor is the upper cervical adjustment. The purpose of the adjustment is to mechanically return the head and neck to its normal position. By returning the head and neck to its balanced position, neurological stress is reduced and body posture is returned to normal.
Each patient's chiropractic adjustment experience and healing response is unique. One thing is universal: the light touch of the adjustment will set your body in the direction for achieving optimum health.
NUCCA requires the existence of postural problems to qualify as a patient; all of the people in the pilot study had postural problems. NUCCA doctors do not claim what they do should substitute for standard medical practice nor do they necessarily take people as patients on the basis of symptoms or pain.
The Upper Cervical Research Foundation is currently seeking financial support for the continuation of this important research.
